Govt. scales down direct cash transfer scheme

The Congress-led UPA Government’s game-changing direct cash transfer scheme is being rolled out today, the first day of New Year. But, it is being shrunk to merely 20 districts and seven welfare schemes, from previously planned 51 districts and 34 schemes. Authorities say that gaps in infrastructure, such as unavailability of bank accounts and beneficiaries, have forced them to scale down the scheme. Announcing the details of the roll out of the welfare schemes involved in the project, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram said, “We intend to proceed with a great degree of caution.” read more
