The UK Government should give priority to ensure that the country remains at the cutting edge of developments in the field of marine energy, the energy & climate change committee recommended. The parliamentary committee warned that the country would squander the lead unless the Government focused on slashing costs and setting pushy deployment targets beyond 2020. Japan and China ready to help eurozone via IMF

Japan and China have confirmed that it is ready to help the struggling eurozone solve its sovereign debt crisis via global lender IMF the 17-nation bloc will have to do more. Big high street chains shut 14 shops per day in 2011: study

High rents and rates forced high street chains to put up the shutters on an average of 14 stores across the UK last year, stats compiled by the Local Data Company (LDC) on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) revealed. Multiple retailers slashed their high street presence by 0.25 per cent, which stands for a reduction of 174 shops during 2011. Bookshops, electrical stores, menswear, home furnishings, holiday retailer and pubs & bars suffered fall in numbers, while charity shops, credit unions and pound stores managed to buck the decline. read more

Japanese cars are most dependable: study

Cars manufactured in Japan are the most dependable, a study from California-based research firm J. D. Power & Associates suggests. J. D. Power questioned owners of cars manufactured in 2009 about the type of problems they had been experiencing over the last one year. Respondents reported an average of 132 problems per 100 vehicles. The figure is down from 151 problems reported by vehicle-owners a year ago. Matthew Stover, an analyst for Guggenheim Securities, said, “If your quality score are improving and demand is improving, that is good story for pricing.” read more

IHG reports 57% increase in net profits

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), the owner of Holiday Inn brand that has been named as the official hotel provider for the Olympic Games, has reported strong increase in full-year profit for 2011. The UK-based IHG, which operates as many as 4,500 hotels around the globe, generated net profit of $460 million in 2011, 57 per cent up from $293 million generated in 2010. FCC not to approve LightSquared’s proposal to build 4G-LTE network

According to an e-mailed statement by Federal Communications Commission (FCC)’s spokeswoman Tammy Sun, the FCC had decided against approving startup LightSquared’s proposal to build a countrywide 4G-LTE network. The US government’s decision to break up with LightSquared is essentially an upshot of the results of a recent testing which showed that the startup’s proposed wireless venture – of an open-access, wholesale wireless broadband network that combines satellite and terrestrial technology – disrupts navigation gear, since its signals interfere with global-positioning system. read more
